Kabataang Montreal Announcement

Montreal, Quebec – Kabataang Montreal is celebrating a decade of Filipino youth organizing right in the heart of Pinoyville! Pinoyville is the area in Cotes-des-Neiges where a majority of Filipinos in Quebec find their homes. On December 4, 2010 at 7pm at the Pascal-Baylon Hall at 6570 chemin Cotes-des-Neiges, the site of the first KM general assembly, we commemorate 10 strong years of Filipino youth resistance!

Since 2000, KM has been involved with educating, organizing and mobilizing Filipino-Canadian youth and the community for a better tomorrow with the full participation of our community in shaping that future. We started by addressing issues of youth violence, family separation and racism stemming from the experiences of our youth due to Canada’s fluctuating immigration policies and global migration. Through the years we’ve deepened our analysis and reached out to more youth to combat the systemic and racist barriers to the just and genuine settlement and integration of our community into Canadian society. We’ve taken strides in advancing our work in confronting the alarming high school dropout rates amongst our youth, police harassment  and the growing need to bring out the young women’s issues. Developing our cultural work, creating educational and capacity building programs, organizing youth activities are all part of the program to advance the progressive Filipino youth movement in Montreal, Quebec.

This event is of great significance as the conditions that prompted Kabataang Montreal to form 10 years ago are the same conditions (or worse) that we face today as a marginalized community. We invite everyone to join us for this wonderful celebration filled with our youth and community’s spirit of resistance through music, dance, spoken poetry, rap, and acoustic ambiance!
